How zakat on money is calculated

Zakat is due on wealth that reaches the nisab and has been held for a full lunar year (hawl). The nisab is the value of 85 grams of pure gold, or 595 grams of silver; scholars differ on which to use for cash, so the tool lets you choose. Once the nisab is reached, zakat is 2.5% of the total.

Count cash and bank balances, gold and silver, goods held for sale and money owed to you that you expect to recover, then subtract debts due now.

Living abroad

Use the currency you hold your savings in and today’s local gold price. If your savings are in several currencies, convert them into one first. Your home, car and personal belongings are not counted.
