The 1,095-day rule

To apply for Canadian citizenship you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the 5 years before you apply. Days as a permanent resident count fully. Days before that, as a temporary resident (worker, student, visitor) or protected person, count as half a day each, up to 365 days of credit.

Days abroad are subtracted. The day you leave and the day you come back count as days in Canada.

Before you apply

Use the official IRCC calculator to confirm your count before you submit. It is part of the application. Keep travel records: border agencies can share entry and exit data, and differences cause delays.
