Why the order matters

German bureaucracy is a chain: the address registration (Anmeldung) unlocks your tax ID, which your employer needs; your bank and phone contract often want the registration too. Doing things in this order saves weeks of back-and-forth.

Deadlines you cannot miss

The Anmeldung is due within 2 weeks of moving in. Your residence permit must be applied for before your entry visa expires. A non-EU driving licence stops being valid 6 months after you move here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a bank account before the Anmeldung?

Some online banks allow it, but many branches ask for the registration certificate. If you cannot get an appointment in time, keep proof that you tried.

What if I miss the 2-week deadline?

Register as soon as you can; the office can fine late registrations, but in practice proof that you tried to get an appointment usually helps.

Do I need private liability insurance?

It is not required by law. Decide for yourself; this checklist only lists what is compulsory or practically necessary.

Is my progress sent anywhere?

No. The ticks are saved only in your browser on this device.
