Registering your address in Germany (Anmeldung): a complete step-by-step guide

Translated from the Arabic original. Read in Arabic

Registering your address (Anmeldung) is the first official procedure after moving into a home in Germany, and the most important, because so much else depends on it: opening a bank account, getting your tax ID, your residence permit and registering children at school. This guide explains the whole process.

The legal deadline: two weeks

The Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz) requires you to register your address within two weeks of actually moving in. Registering late can lead to a fine, but more importantly it delays every procedure that needs the registration certificate. In big cities it can be hard to get an appointment within two weeks, so book as soon as you sign your lease and keep proof that you tried.

Documents you need

First, a valid passport or ID card, and your residence permit if you have one. Second, the landlord’s confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung): a form signed by the landlord confirming that you moved in. It is legally required; the lease alone is not enough, and the landlord is obliged to give it to you. Third, the registration form (Anmeldeformular), available on your municipality’s website. For spouses and children: marriage and birth certificates, with a sworn translation if they are in a foreign language.

Where and how to register

You register at your municipality’s citizens’ office (Bürgeramt or Bürgerbüro). Book an appointment on the municipality’s website; some cities also allow online registration if you have an electronic ID card. At the appointment the officer checks your documents and enters your details, and you usually receive your registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) on the spot.

What happens after registration?

If this is your first registration in Germany, within a few weeks you will receive a letter from the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) with your tax identification number (Steuer-ID). Keep it safe: your employer needs it to deduct your tax in the correct class, and without it your tax may be deducted temporarily in class 6, the highest.

When you move or leave

When you move to a new home in Germany, register the new address the same way within two weeks; the old one is removed automatically. If you leave Germany for good, you must deregister (Abmeldung). Forgetting to deregister can leave you liable for ongoing charges such as the broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag).

Important tips

Make sure your name is written in every document exactly as in your passport, because a one-letter difference causes problems with the bank and the tax office. Keep several copies of your registration certificate. And beware of a landlord who refuses the confirmation or offers to register you at an address where you do not live: registering at a fake address is against the law.
