Why the permesso comes first

The 8-working-day deadline runs from the day you enter, and the application receipt is what proves your stay is legal until the card is ready. Apply in your first week, then get your codice fiscale and residenza: most other steps need them.

Frequently asked questions

What if I missed the 8-day deadline?

Delay can cause problems up to refusal. Apply as soon as possible and ask the Questura or your comune’s migrant help desk.

Can I drive on my licence after one year?

No. After one year of residence you need an Italian licence, by conversion if there is an agreement or by taking the test.

Is my progress sent anywhere?

No. The ticks are saved in your browser only.
